Where Should You Start on Your Writing Journey?

Recently, a young man who introduced himself as a budding writer, contacted me through LinkedIn and asked this question: "where to start in my writing career?"
This question warmed my heart for two reasons: (1) we all start somewhere and need someone to guide and advise us in the right direction, and (2) writing is both a skill and an art. While aspects of writing can be learnt, it is also an expression of our true selves (or a passion).
So this is the advice that I gave the young man and will give to any other budding writer:
Firstly, a great place to start is what you are good at. Therefore, choose a genre that best suits your style, personality and creativity.
Secondly, choose a topic that you are comfortable with, and chip at it bit by bit. If writing a piece is readily coming together, stick with it. If not, you may want to consider moving on to another idea for your writing.
Finally, do not panic if you encounter writer's block. While writing, choose quiet times when your brain feels fresh and ideas are flowing. If you reach a juncture where you feel stuck, save your work and return to it when the creative juices are flowing again. That may mean resetting, whether in your personal or professional life. Do not pressure yourself to write. It may just hinder your creativity, true essence and purpose of writing in the first place.
